Honduras President to Open Diplomatic Office in Jerusalem

Tegucigalpa, MINA – Honduras President Juan Orlando Hernandez will travel to Israel this weekend  to inaugurate the Diplomatic Office in Jerusalem.

“For me, this is an acknowledgment that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel,” Hernandez said, Aljazeera reported as quoted by MINA.

The Diplomatic Office will open on Sunday (1/9) and become an extension of the Honduran embassy based in Tel Aviv.

“This has been widely debated in the world and I know that I will be criticized for this, but if Honduras has the capital city of Tegucigalpa, and other countries refuse to recognize it, that is the same as not recognizing our sovereignty,” he said.

Meanwhile Sara Netanyahu, wife of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, first announced the news about the opening of the Honduras diplomatic office in his upload on Facebook on Tuesday (27/8).

“I am pleased to announce that on Sunday this week, Honduras will open a diplomatic mission in Jerusalem, a step towards the embassy,” she said.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem in the 1967 war and later annexed it in an act that was never recognized by the international community. The Palestinian Authority views East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state. (T/Ais/P2)
