Astronomers Spot Planet with Three Suns

Washington, 04 Syawal 1437/09 July 2016  (MINA)  –  A gaseous planet with three suns and a mass four times that of Jupiter has been spotted by astronomers, WAM reported.

Located 320 light years away in the constellation of Centaurus the planet, known as HD 131399Ab, goes one better than Luke Skywalker’s home planet of Tatooine in the film Star Wars, which famously boasted two sunrises.

They said the stars have different temperatures which give them different colours so there would be a bluer, a yellower and a redder star.

About 16 million years old, HD 131399Ab is one of the youngest exoplanets discovered to date, the observatory said in a statement.

By comparison, Earth is about 4.5 billion years old.

With an average temperature of about 580 degrees Celsius (1,076 degrees Fahrenheit) and an estimated mass of four Jupiters, it is also one of the coldest and smallest directly imaged exoplanets. (T/R07/R01)
