UN Expresses Concern Over Continued Administrative Detention in Israeli Jails

New York, 24 Rabiul Akhir 1437/3 February 2016 (MINA) – The United Nations Coordinator for Humanitarian Assistance and Development Aid in the Palestinian territories Robert Piper expressed ‘deep concern’ on Tuesday over administrative detention practices in Israeli prisons.

In a statement, issued today, Piper said he was deeply concerned over the rapidly deteriorating health of Palestinian administrative detainee Mohammed Al-Qiq, who went into hunger strike since November 25 in protest against the arbitrary nature of his detention and ill-treatment, Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) reported, quoting QNA.

Administrative detention has been condemned several times by the UN Human Rights Office and the Human Rights Committee.

Piper cites Israeli Prison Service data as counting 527 Palestinians, including one woman and five minors, held under administrative detention at the end of November 2015.

“I reiterate the United Nations’ longstanding position that all administrative detainees – Palestinian or Israeli – should be charged or released without delay. All allegations of ill-treatment must also be independently and promptly
