OIC, Rights Groups Welcomes the IJC Rebuke of Myanmar

Jeddah, MINA – The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and rights group on Friday welcomed the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) which urged Myanmar to take steps to prevent the genocide of the Rohingya Muslim minority.

The OIC voiced support for the ICJ decision in The Hague, Netherlands, on Thursday and called on Myanmar to fully comply with court orders, Anadolu Agency reported.

The Muslim organization also urged the international community to increase support for legal efforts to secure justice for the community.

The Arakan Rohingya Union (ARU) and the European Rohingya Council (ERC) on Friday also “warmly” welcomed the decision.

“The Court Order on provisional measures are binding under the international law, and being a signatory of the Genocide Convention, Myanmar Government has full obligation to abide by the Court Order,” they said in a joint statement.

The African nation, Gambia on behalf of the OIC brought the case to the ICJ after more than 700,000 Rohingyas fled across the border into Bangladesh, telling horrific stories of rape, arson and massacres by security forces.

ICJ decisions, which were formed after World War II to settle disputes between countries but the court does not have the means to carry out its decisions.

Myanmar has previously defended itself by declaring its military campaign to tackle extremist threats in the state of Rakhine. The country’s de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, defended his country against claims at the ICJ last month. (T/R7/RE1)
