US Calls For Multilateral Cooperation to Support Palestinians

US State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert

Washington, MINA – The United States on Thursday said it would not comment on reports by a United Nations envoy, but called for multilateral cooperation to help the dire situation there.

“We’re always very cautious about not commenting on hypothetical situations,” KUNA quoted State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert as saying after UN Envoy Nickolay Mladenov warned that Gaza Strip was on the verge of “full collapse.”

Special Presidential Adviser Jason Greenblatt visited the region and reported “We must all work together to help the people of Gaza to ensure Israel and Egypt security, and also improve their lives.”

“I want to remind folks that part of the reason that the situation is so dire, part of the reason that the Palestinian people face hardships is a direct result of Hamas,”

Nauert told reporters a day after the US put the head of Hamas Ismail Haniyeh on its terror blacklist and slapped sanctions on him.

Last week, President Donald Trump threatened to cut US aid to the Palestinians if they continued to refuse contact with his administration officials.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas severed ties with the US since its decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in December. (T/RS5/RS1)
