2019 African Day Held in Jakarta
Jakarta, MINA – Representatives of African countries in Indonesia, Saturday night, celebrated the 56th African Day, at Borobudur Hotel in Jakarta.
African Day is also commemorated as the day of establishment of African Unity Organization (OAU) which became forerunner of African Union.
“Thank you for African ambassadors, thank you for invited guests. “Here we will celebrate African Day which is very important for Africans,” said Algerian Ambassador to Indonesia Aziria Abdelkader in his speech at 2019 Africa Day Commemoration.
Ambassador Abdelkader, who is also Deputy Ambassador of African countries group with 54 member states, said the relationship between Africa and Indonesia had been going on for a long time. That relationship has increased since the Asian-African Conference in Bandung in 1955.
“The cooperation relationship between Indonesia and countries on African continent that already exists, it can be further enhanced to advance African countries themselves,” he said.
African Day was also attended by ambassadors from neighboring countries, such as Palestinian Ambassador, Iranian Ambassador and others.
In addition, countries on African continent also provide special food from their countries, for example from Mozambique, South Africa, Sudan, Nigeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt and Libya.
African Day is anniversary of founding of African Unity Organization (OAU) in 1963 which is held every May 25. On that day, leaders of 30 from 32 independent countries in Africa signed charter of establishment of OAU in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
In 1991, OAU established African Economic Community. In 2002, l OAU established its successor, African Union. African Day is aimed to celebrate the unity of African continent. (T/Sj/R04)
