We’ll Go to the UN to Punish Guatemala, on Decision to Relocate its Embassy to Al-Quds -Ereqat Vows

PLO Secretary General Saeb Erekat.

Ramallah, MINA – The Secretary-general of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) Dr. Saeb Ereqat said here today that the Palestinian leadership will go to UN to punish Guatemala, on its decision to relocate its embassy, in Tel Aviv, to Al-Quds (Jerusalem).

Ereqat dismissed Guatemala’s decision, calling it contravening the international law, UN Charter and 13 resolutions issued by the UN Security Council, related to the status of Al-Quds, drawing the attention that all UN General Assembly resolutions prohibit relocating of embassies or missions and recognition of Al-Quds, as a capital of Israel, laying emphasis that the question is attached to the regional security and stability, SPA reported, citing a press statement.

Expressing fear that the US decision is an introduction to impose Israeli facts, on the Palestinian occupied territories through annexing settlement blocks or Al-Quds to Israel, Ereqat concluded by asserting that the US has isolated itself from being a party seeking a solution through peace process and metamorphosed into a part of the problem, demising the world cherished 2-state option.

Guatemala and neighboring Honduras were two of only a handful of countries to join the United States and Israel in voting against the resolution on Jerusalem.

The United States is an important source of assistance to Guatemala and Honduras, and Trump had threatened to cut off financial aid to countries that supported the U.N. resolution. (T/RS5/RS1)
