Washington, MINA – United States President Donald Trump announced new reciprocal tariffs on several trade partners, included a 32% import tariff for Indonesia, as part of a wider set of measures aimed at reducing the US trade deficit.

Trump referred to the day as “Liberation Day,” highlighting that the tariffs are part of his administration’s efforts to ensure that the U.S. economy and businesses are prioritized.

He stated, “In many cases, especially in trade, friends are worse than enemies,” pointing out that the U.S. has subsidized many countries, allowing them to prosper at the expense of American industries.

The U.S. president emphasized that trade deficits were no longer just an economic issue but a national emergency, stating that the new tariffs were part of his “Declaration of Independence.”

He mentioned that the tariff rate on Indonesia is only 2% lower than that imposed on China, the U.S.’s “heavy adversary,” which faces a 34% tariff. Other ASEAN countries, Thailand and Vietnam, have also been affected, with tariffs set at 36% and 46%, respectively.

In 2024, Indonesia contributed a trade surplus of $16.08 billion to the U.S., with key exports such as garments, electrical equipment, footwear, and vegetable oils.

This new tariff announcement comes after Trump previously imposed a 20% tariff on all imports from China and 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

The global economic community is closely monitoring this development, with many anticipating retaliatory actions from U.S. allies such as the European Union and Canada, which have already stated their intention to respond to Trump’s tariffs.

Deutsche Bank economist Matthew Luzzetti warned that these trade tensions could slow global growth by at least 1% over the next few quarters, with long-term consequences if the uncertainty persists. []
