Rome, 15 Rabiul Akhir 1438/14 January 2017 (MINA) – Italy on Friday reiterated its support to the two-state solution for ending the Middle East conflict.

“Italy, with the international community, continues to support the two states as the only viable solution to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” KUNA quoted Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Angelino Alfano as saying in a press statement following a meeting with the visiting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The Italian official, however, underlined the importance that the Palestinian leadership condemnation of violence should be accompanied by concrete actions and strategies for countering incitement.

He stated that Italy has demonstrated over years its commitment to support Palestinian authority’s budget with more than 240 million euros since 2005 and will continue to do its part, in order to fully revive the prospects of a just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution.

For his part, President Abbas urged the international community to give a stronger impetus to the Israeli-Palestinian dispute and hoped that the Paris Conference would, in this regard, make a positive contribution. (T/RS05/RS01)
