Parliamentary Speaker to Leave for Indonesia for MIKTA Meeting

Seoul, MINA — National Assembly Speaker Moon Hee-sang is set to leave for Indonesia on Thursday to attend a parliamentary leaders’ meeting of five middle power countries, Yonhap reported, citing his office.

The so-called MIKTA is an informal cooperative body created by Mexico, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Turkey and Australia in September 2013 in a bid to enhance coordination on global issues of common interest. A meeting of MIKTA’s parliamentary speakers has been held since 2015.

Later in the day, Moon will depart for Indonesia for a six-day visit, during which he plans to deliver a keynote speech at the MIKTA meeting.

“Moon will highlight South Korea’s status as a middle power country that plays a bridge between advanced and emerging countries, and seek cooperative measures among MIKTA parliaments to discuss global issues ranging from inclusive growth, migration and women,” his office said.

Starting Friday, he will meet with Indonesian parliamentary leaders, including Oesman Sapta Odang, the speaker of the Regional Representative Council, to discuss ways to expand exchanges between the two nations.

On Saturday, Moon will preside over the first session of the MITKA meeting in Bali and will give a speech under the theme of “Innovative industries to support inclusive economic growth.”

He will return home Tuesday, the same day President Moon Jae-in will leave for Pyongyang to hold his third summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. (T/RS5/RS1)
