Islamic Relief USA Supports Food Insecure families in Gaza
Gaza, 18 Safar 1438/18 November 2016 (MINA) – A contribution of $2 million from Islamic Relief USA (IRUSA), the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) was able to distribute food for 6,933 families comprising more than 38,000 individuals living in the Gaza Strip, an UNRWA press release said on Thursday.
The two rounds of emergency food distribution, where food items are partially covered through this contribution, started in July 2016 and will continue to December 2016.
With the distribution of in-kind assistance these families are able to meet their most basic food requirements during the year, WAFA reported, quoting the statement.
The continuous Israeli blockade left a devastating impact on the socio-economic life of the two million residents of the Gaza Strip particularly on the 70 percent registered as Palestine refugees.
In the year 2000, the Agency provided approximately 80,000 refugees in Gaza with food assistance. This number has increased to more than 930,000 today, said UNRWA.
Over 930,000 refugees in Gaza will require food assistance in 2016, an estimated 98,000 of whom are abject poor, and will be assisted through the Agency’s core human development programming. (T/R07/R01)
