President Joko Widodo shakes hands with a number of HMI cadres in Ambon ,, Wednesday, Feb.14, 2018.

Ambon, Maluku, MINA – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) highlighted Indonesia`s contribution to world peace while addressing members of the Association of Muslim University Students (HMI), here, Wednesday.

“We continue to offer assistance to Palestine in its fight against oppression and injustice. We remember that in 2016, we had hosted an extraordinary summit of the OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation). We had also opened an honorary consulate in Ramallah. We also pushed for a summit in Istanbul to express our objection to the United States` unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as Israel`s capital,” President Jokowi noted in his opening remarks during the 30th Congress of the HMI held to coincide with the organization`s 71st anniversary at the auditorium of the University of Pattimura.

To address the Rohingya crisis, Indonesia has been active in providing humanitarian assistance and has made diplomatic efforts by involving conflicting parties to find a peaceful solution.

In January 2018, the president had paid a visit to Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.

“I visited the refugee camps in Cox Bazar, and the condition there was so sad,” Jokowi noted.

Jokowi also recalled his visit to war-torn Afghanistan.

“Why did I insist on going to Kabul? It is because of the importance (I attach to the values of) brotherhood and unity,” Jokowi emphasized.

Visits to countries reeling under the impacts of humanitarian crises can serve as a reminder to Indonesia that brotherhood and unity are priceless, according to the head of state.

Among members of the presidential entourage present during the visit to Maluku were Minister/State Secretary Pratikno, Research, Technology, and Higher Education Minister M. Nasir, Education and Culture Minister Muhadjir Effendy, Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono, Maluku Governor Said Assagaff, senior politician Akbar Tanjung, HMI Chairman Mulyadi Tamsir, Chairman of the People`s Consultative Assembly Zulkifli Hasan, Chairman of the Regional Representative Council Oesman Sapta Odang, and Chairman of the United Development Party Romahurmuziy.
