Jakarta, MINA Indonesia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs has launched a national program to train and certify non-judge mediators in a bid to reduce the country’s growing divorce rate.

The initiative, held in partnership with the National Marriage Advisory and Preservation Agency (BP4), brought together BP4 leaders from 19 provinces for a three-day workshop in Jakarta.

“The Ministry of Religious Affairs is not only an administrative body but also a partner in strengthening family resilience,” said Ahmad Zayadi, Director of Bina KUA and Keluarga Sakinah, during the opening session.

The program builds on a 2016 memorandum of understanding between BP4 and the Supreme Court’s Directorate General of Religious Courts, which supports mediator certification and placement within Religious Courts.

BP4 Deputy Chair Muhammad Fuad Nasar described the training as a key step to promoting peaceful conflict resolution. “Strong families are the foundation of a strong nation,” he said, adding that counselors serve as “doctors” who help couples heal their relationships before turning to divorce.

Fuad also echoed Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar, who has frequently stressed that national harmony begins with harmony within families.

Through the certification program, Kemenag aims to strengthen the role of community-based mediators in resolving marital disputes amicably and reducing the social and emotional toll of divorce across Indonesia.[]
