Indonesia Fully Supports Palestinian Independence : President

Jakarta, MINA – President Joko Widodo affirmed full support of the Republic of Indonesia for the independence of Palestine as one of the embodiments of the mandate of the 1945 Constitution.

“We also offer full support to the Palestinian independence,” Antara News repoted, citing the president in his speech at the 2017 joint meeting of the Regional Representatives Council 9DPD) and the House of Representatives (DPR) 2017 in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Indonesia had opened the Honorary Consulate in Ramallah, Palestine. Indonesia also continues to encourage the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the United Nations to support the independence of Palestine, Widodo revealed.

He emphasized that Indonesia has also strongly condemned the restriction of worship at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in July 2017. To this end, Indonesian diplomacy moved to defend the Palestinian people by proposing international protection at the Al-Aqsa Complex, among others.

He pointed out that the support for Palestinian independence is in accordance with Indonesias 1945 Constitution that mandates the nation to contribute to maintaining world order based on independence, lasting peace, and social justice.

“It requires all of us to implement a free and active foreign policy,” he pointed out.

He stated that a free and active foreign policy was also demonstrated by Indonesias proactive stance and leadership in encouraging Myanmar to resolve the conflict in Rakhine State through more inclusive development, respect for human rights, and protection of all communities.

“Indonesia has also given shelter to 1,806 migrants displaced due to the conflict, sent humanitarian aid, and built schools in Myanmar,” he added. (T/RS5/RS1)
