President Prabowo Subianto

Jakarta, MINA — Indonesia on Monday firmly denied media reports claiming that President Prabowo Subianto would visit Israel following his official trip to Egypt.

The Foreign Ministry dismissed the reports as “not true.” Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang told journalists there were no plans for Prabowo to travel to Israel.

Israeli outlets The Times of Israel and Ynet had earlier reported that preparations were underway for Prabowo’s potential visit, which could have taken place on Tuesday or Wednesday, an unprecedented move for an Indonesian leader.

Prabowo is currently attending an international peace summit in the Egyptian resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh, co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and US President Donald Trump. The summit focuses on efforts to end the two-year-long conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono, who accompanied the president, also rejected the reports, saying: “It’s not true. As per the initial plan, the President will return to the homeland after the event in Egypt is completed,” Tempo news outlet quoted him as saying.

Before his departure to Egypt, Prabowo had instructed the Indonesian Armed Forces to prepare 20,000 troops as potential peacekeepers in Gaza, pending approval from the UN Security Council and the summit’s outcome.[]
