INDONESIA CONCERNS OVER DEATH MASS SENTENCES IN EGYPT

Jakarta, 30 Jumadil Akhir 1435/30 April 2014 (MINA) –   Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa expressed his concern over the latest mass death  penalty in Egypt who sentenced 683 Muslim Brotherhood members, including its leader Mohammed Badie.

“As the largest Muslim country in the world, Indonesia is certainly following the crisis in Egypt. “We deeply regret it, ” Marty Natalegawa said in Jakarta, Tuesday (29/4).

Egyptian court on Monday (28/04/2014) sentenced to death  683 of pro Morsi  as well as Brotherhood members, after an Egyptian court also sentenced to 529  of brotherhood members who joins in the routine protests denying the ousting of the first freely elected president Mohamed Morsi on  July 3, 2013, by its defence minister Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.

The verdict drew criticism from the international communities,  including United Nations, saying the decision violates human rights. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon plans to discuss the issue with Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy this weekend.

“Without intending to intervene in the domestic affairs of Egypt, we are concerned with the news of the death warrant to 683 people on April 28, 2014 and earlier to 529 Egyptian citizens in March 2014. It is also widespread concern of the people of Indonesia, “said Marty.

Indonesian sincerely hope that the law process still relies on the human rights values and principles, including respect for the presumption of innocence and the fulfillment of the rights of the accused in the court process.

“We also pray that the democratization process in Egypt still relies on the spirit of reconciliation and inclusive process and hoped that it runs peacefully without violence,” Marty added.

“As a country that has passed the political transition, Indonesia certainly awares that the situation is very complex. Nevertheless, we believe and hope that the Egyptian government will be able to handle it well, based on the interests and aspirations of the Egyptians themselves. “(L/P03/P04)
