IINA’s Assembly Turns Agency into “Union”
Jeddah, MINA – The 5th International Islamic News Agency (IINA), a specialized media organ of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), on Sunday announced the agency would be turned into a “union.”
The session, opened by the Saudi Minister of Culture and Information Dr. Awwad Al-Awwad, accepted new members in the “agency,” the UAE, Oman, Djibouti, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Benin, Azerbaijan and Malaysia, in addition to the permanent member, Saudi Arabia, Palestine and the OIC, KUNA reported.
Addressing the session, minister Awwad, who is also head of IINA’s Executive Council, said he looked forward to the implementation of the resolutions made by the 11th session of the Islamic Conference for Information Ministers themed “new media developments to fight terrorism and Islamophobia”, Saudi Arabia, December 2016.
Turning IINA into a union includes a development vision to deliver its message and achieve its projects and plans for serving the Muslim nations, he added.
It will also be able to enhance its role for qualifying and supporting media staff in the member agencies. It will also launch programs and projects for broader support to the Islamic issues and the OIC’s message, the minister said.
For his part, OIC Secretary General Al- Dr. Yousef Al-Othaimeen stressed the significance of joint Islamic media action to serve the causes of the nation and defend its interest, at the face of the Islamophobia campaigns that target “our religious and cultural icons and values.”
Saudi Press Agency (SPA), chairman Abdullah Al Hussein said that since IINA was established by a resolution made by the Third Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers in 1972, has been assuming a leading media role committed to the causes of the Muslim nations. (T/RS5/RS1)
