Governor Anies Becomes Speaker of U20 Summit on Climate Change

Tokyo, MINA – The High-Level Annual Meeting of Mayor of Urban-20 (U20) takes place in Tokyo. Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan was present as a speaker and at the same time attended the 20-year Sister City celebration between Jakarta and Tokyo in Tokyo, Japan.

Governor Anies said the U20 meeting was very important because this is a discussion platform from the G20 participating cities.

‘Leaders from global cities are present. Jakarta also participates to continue to show, we are ready to become one of the global cities in Asian region, “he said, as the press statement received by MINA.

The U20 series of events in Tokyo began Monday. Governor Anies scheduled to be a speaker at three different events on May 20 and became a panelist in the first session on Climate Action on May 21, 2019. After finishing speaking Anies return to Jakarta.

In the session, Governor Anies will present the Jakarta City action plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by involving community participation such as Climate Village Program, Waste Bank, City Agriculture, and Empowerment of Housewives.

In this series of meetings, Governor Anies will be scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Environment, Deputy Minister of Defense, Infrastructure, Transportation and Tourism, JICA Vice President, UCLG World Secretary General, C40 Ambassador, and IFC representatives. One of the important agendas in this visit was the completion of talks on MRT development in second phase.

The U20 is a discussion platform among city leaders to voice collective messages and inclusive solutions to G20 leaders about significant role of cities in sustainable development.

The three main topics in discussing the U20 agenda are Climate Action, Social Inclusion and Integration, and Sustainable Economic Growth.

The result of the U20 initiative is Communique, which is a concrete recommendation to the G20 leaders on how it can support cities implementin priority agenda.

In this prestigious meeting, city leaders will symbolically hand over Communique to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as Chair and host of the G20 in 2019.

In addition, to attend the U20 Mayors Summit, Governor’s visit to Tokyo was also to celebrate the relationship of the 20th City Friendship between Tokyo and Jakarta that has been established since 1989. (T/Sj/P2)
