Ramallah, MINA – Fatah central committee Sunday said the US declaration on Jerusalem requires the international community to build a new mechanism that will be able to lay the proper foundation for any political process and nourish it to reach a political solution and establish peace.

This came in a statement issued after its meeting at the presidential headquarters in Ramallah, headed by the President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.

The Committee listened to a briefing by Abbas and reviewed the prevailing conditions and action at the Palestinian, regional and international levels since the US administration announced recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the transfer of its embassy to it.

The Central Committee affirmed its absolute rejection of this decision, pointing out that as a result of this decision, the US has lost its ability to play the role of mediator between the two sides of the conflict and is no longer able to play the role of sponsor of the peace process, which requires the international community to build a new mechanism.

It expressed its deep concern about some other US positions, especially the non-opposition of the Israeli settlements and the position against UNRWA, and the serious effects of these positions, including encouraging Israel to escalate settlement expansion of Palestinian territories and taking further steps hostile against Palestinians and their leadership.

The Central Committee paid tribute to Palestinians facing Israeli policies and the effects of the US steps, and called upon the people affected by these policies and consequences to take judicial action, including at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

It expressed appreciation for the positions of Arab countries, especially the positions of Egypt under the leadership of President Abdul Fattah el-Sisi, Saudi Arabia led by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdul Aziz and Jordan under the leadership of King Abdullah II, as well as appreciation for the positions of many friendly countries including Russia, China and the European Union.

The committee reiterated its call for the latter to take additional steps, particularly with regards to the recognition of the State of Palestine on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

It welcomed the Palestine Liberation Organization Executive Committee’s establishment of a High Committee for the implementation of the decisions of the Central Council and stressed the importance of this action and its readiness to participate in the work of the Committee.

The Central Committee reaffirmed the importance of working towards the achievement of national unity, reuniting the West Bank with the Gaza Strip to achieve national independence, and the need to continue efforts for this central objective. (T/RS5/RS1)
