Ramallah, 28 Jumaddil Akhir 1436/17 April 2015 (MINA) – Palestinian political factions on Thursday condemned “aggressive policies” against Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, a week after the death of Jaafar Ibrahim Awad, 22.

Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society said in a joint statement that conditions within Israeli jails are growing increasingly difficult for Palestinian detainees, noting growing numbers of sick prisoners due to medical negligence by the Israeli Prison Service, Ma’an News Agency quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting.

The statement added that Israel is using “dangerous policies” in attempts to dispirit prisoners, and held Israel responsible for the death of Jaafar Awad due to pre-existing health complications that rapidly deteriorated while being held in Israeli prison.

The factions condemned the silence of international rights groups towards Palestinian prisoners, calling for the unification of efforts of all political, media and rights groups to expose the suffering of prisoners and find ways to support their cause internationally.

The statement was released to commemorate the annual Palestinian prisoners day.

Prisoners’ rights group Addammer has reported widespread use of state-complicit torture, isolation, and denial of family visits among other mistreatment inflicted by the Israeli Prison Service.(T/P008/R03)
