Australian Ambassador Visits Indonesian Ulema to Discuss Mosque Attacks

Jakarta, MINA – Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Gary Quinlan visited Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in Central Jakarta, Tuesday to discuss terror attacks carried out by Australian in two mosques in New Zealand.

The arrival of the Australian Ambassador was welcomed by the Chairman of the MUI’s International Relations and International Cooperation, Muhyiddin Junaidi and Deputy Secretary General of the MUI Center, Zaitun Rasmin.

“The arrival of the Australian Ambassador is not the initiative of the MUI, but the desire of the Ambassador himself,” Muhyiddin told the media when he received Quinlan’s visit.

The shooting attack that occurred on Friday was carried out by Brenton Tarrant at Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Islamic Center, Christchurch, New Zealand, killing Friday worshipers as 50 people and 48 injured from various countries.

“After the murder of terrorists who committed the Australian on behalf of themselves and the Australian government expressed their deepest condolences to Muslims who were victims in Christchurch and Muslims throughout the world,” said Quinlan.

Gery continued, his country was facing a similar problem to other countries, namely related to terrorism, hate speech, and hoax news.

“We are facing similar problems, namely the problem of terrorism, hate speech, hoax news that is difficult to separate from Australian society,” he said.

He added after  this case, the Australian Government would take positive steps with visiting mosque priests and leaders of Islamic organizations, and would tighten security in New Zealand.

“We convey that the Aussie will take positive steps, especially in meeting with mosque priests and meeting with leaders of Islamic organizations there,” he added. (L/Sj/R04)
