Arab Economic Summit Runs in Beirut

Beirut, MINA – An economic development summit kicked off in Lebanese capital Beirut on Sunday.

Organized by the Arab League, teh summit was only attended by three Arab leaders, the Lebanese president, Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz from Mauritania, Anadolu reported.

The meeting was attended by representatives of 20 countries, such as Egypt and Kuwait, who sent their prime ministers, foreign ministers or finance ministers. But a number of officials refused to attend the event.

The summit discussed the main topics about the Arab free trade zone and the economic impact of Syrian refugees in a number of Arab countries.

Most Arab states are represented at the summit by delegations at the ambassadorial level. Syria, whose Arab League membership has been suspended since 2011, and Libya are not taking part in the meeting.

The last Arab economic summit was held in Saudi capital Riyadh in 2013. (T/SR/P2)
