NGOs of ASEAN Countries Call for Stop the War In Syria

Kuala Lumpur, 10 Muharram 1   438/11 October 2016 (MINA) – Some Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) from ASEAN countries called Sunday on all parties involved in the war in Syria to stop attacking each other for the sake of the safety of lives of innocent people trapped in their conflicts.

The NGOs  from the region held an emergency meeting under the theme  “Stop The War In Syria” in Shah Alam, Malaysia, to address the deteriorating conditions in Syria today.

According to them, there are at least five parties that control and fight each other in Syria, such as ISIS (Daesh), Jabhah Fath Sham, the Kurdish forces, rebel groups and government forces.

“Therefore, we call upon all parties to restraint from and to stop any further attacks that resulted in more civilian casualties,” said Mohammad Azmi,  president of Malaysian humanitarian agency, Majlis Pertubuhan Islam Malaysia (MAPIM), in the meeting.

The same call is also voiced by the chairman of Aqsa Working Group (AWG) Agus Sudarmaji.

The Indonesian agency leader called on all parties to immediately stop the war, stressing that the problem arising in Muslim countries should be resolved by themselves without foreign interference.

Meanwhile, the delegation from Thailand also criticized the war in Syria. They even held a campaign on social media in their efforts to halt the war among themselves as it might cause collateral damages on Syrian people.

The meeting, which lasted one day, was attended by humanitarian agencies in several ASEAN nations such as AWG (Indonesia), MAPIM, SHURA, Salimah, Policy and Youth for Syria (Malaysia), Father Relief (Singapore), Friend of China For Rohingya (China), Peace and Justice Development (Cambodia), Council Networking Shaikul Islam (Thailand).

Also representatives from Palestine, Namibia and Britain were present on the special meeting. (L/R04/R07)
