Over 20,000 Israeli Soldiers Wounded, Half Suffer Mental Health Disorders

Tel Aviv, MINA – More than 20,000 Israeli occupation soldiers have been wounded since the war in Gaza began in October 2023, with over half suffering from mental health conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Israel’s Ministry of Defense confirmed on Sunday.

According to the ministry’s Rehabilitation Department, about 56% of the wounded are battling PTSD or other psychological disorders, underscoring the severe mental toll of the ongoing conflict, Anadolu Agency reported.

The ministry added that nearly 45% of cases involve physical injuries, while 20% of soldiers are struggling with both mental and physical conditions.

Official figures show that 99 soldiers required prosthetics following amputations, 16 are paralyzed, 56 are classified as having disabilities exceeding 100%, and 24 are listed as fully disabled.

Roughly 64% of the 20,000 wounded are reservists. On average, about 1,000 newly wounded soldiers are being treated each month, in addition to hundreds of claims linked to earlier wars.

In total, Israel’s rehabilitation system is currently caring for more than 81,000 veterans, nearly 40% of whom, some 31,000 individuals which are grappling with psychological trauma. The ministry projects that by 2028, the number of veterans under its care will approach 100,000, with at least half expected to suffer from PTSD or related disorders.

Meanwhile, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has killed nearly 65,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children since October 2023. The relentless bombardment has rendered the enclave uninhabitable, triggering famine and the spread of disease.[]
