Indonesia Witnesses the Signing of US-Taliban Peace Agreement

Doha, MINA – Indonesian Foreign Minister, Retno Marsudi attended the signing of an peace agreement for the United States-Taliban on Saturday, February 29 which took place in Doha, Qatar. She hopes the international community will oversee the next process.

“The international community must provide full support for the next process after the signing of this agreement” said Retno in a press statement received by MINA on Sunday.

In signing the peace agreement, the US was represented by Zalmay Khailzad, the special envoy who was also a Special Representative for the Reconciliation of Afghanistan and Taliban represented by the chief negotiator, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar.

According to Retno, the most important thing after the agreement is the implementation of peace agreement and dialogue process between parties in Afghanistan or what is called the Intra-Afghan Dialogue.

“In accordance with the mandate of the Indonesian constitution, Indonesia is ready to contribute to continuing the peace process in Afghanistan, especially the Intra Afghan Dialogue,” said the foreign minister.

So far, Indonesia has focused on building two important elements in the peace process in Afghanistan, namely the role of ulemas and the empowerment of women in the country.

“I will fly tonight to Kabul to launch the Indonesia-Afghan Women Solidarity Network together with Indonesian women leaders to discuss women’s empowerment in promoting peace in Afghanistan,” said Retno.

Foreign Minister was invited to sign a peace agreement between the US and the Taliban representing Indonesia as a country incorporated in co-facilitators or like-minded countries that had contributed greatly to peace in Afghanistan.

The five countries that have been included as co-facilitators are Indonesia, Germany, Norway, Qatar and Uzbekistan. In the talks, the five countries committed to continue to provide support so that the peace process can continue and be sustainable so that the people of Afghanistan can live peacefully. (T/RE1)
