Ramallah, MINA – Palestinian national figures launched on Thursday an initiative under the theme “Al-Quds Call” aiming at ending the internal division and adhering to national unity.

The initiative came in the wake of the Jerusalematies’ success in forcing Israeli police to remove metal detectors and security cameras and canceling the restrictions on the Palestinian entry into al-Aqsa Mosque.

The initiative was announced during a conference held in al-Bireh municipality building, PIC reported.

A number of key personalities including independent figures and representatives of Palestinian factions, Palestinian National Council, and Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) attended the conference.

Zehira Kamal read out the initiative’s statement and called on Hamas Movement to dismantle the governmental emergency committee in Gaza in coincidence with immediate halting of Palestinian Authority (PA) administrative and financial measures pursued against the Gazan people.

She also stressed the importance of holding urgent preparations for the formation of a national unity government and for conducting general elections as well as legislative and national council elections.

The statement also highlighted the importance of unifying the national efforts inside Palestine as well as in the diaspora. It also stressed the necessity of supporting popular resistance and halting security coordination with Israeli occupation authorities.

Political bureau member of Hamas, Salah al-Bardawil, said in a statement Thursday morning that Hamas is ready to dissolve the governmental emergency committee as soon as the consensus government takes up its duties as regards the blockaded Gaza Strip.

Hamas further called on the PA to cease its oppressive measures on Gaza and to start national dialogue and consultations for the formation of a national unity government. Hamas also demanded the activation of the Palestinian Legislative Council in order to hold the elections.(T/R04/RS5)
