Canada Gets First Headscarf-Wearing Anchorwoman

Ankara, 20 Safar 1438/20 November 2016 (MINA) – Canada has got its first-ever headscarf-wearing anchorwoman on Friday, Anadolu Agency reported on Sunday.

Panamanian-born Ginella Massa wrote on her Facebook page: “This is not just a big deal for me personally – As far as I know, no woman in hijab has ever anchored a major newscast in Canada.”

Working for CityNews, Massa filled in as an anchor for the Friday late newscast.

Massa also became the country’s first headscarf-wearing TV news reporter in 2015.

Massa was born in Panama, where her parents come from. Massa came to Canada with her mother when she was a year old and grew up in Toronto.

Her mother converted to Islam from Catholicism when Massa was very young so she was raised Muslim.
