Anies Baswedan Innaugurated As Jakarta Governor

Jakarta, MINA – Indonesian former Education Minister Anies Baswedan sworn in as the new governor of Jakarta at a ceremony held by President Joko Widodo “Jokowi” at the State Palace.

It is known as the second capital governor innauguration at the State Palace since Ali Sadikin took office in 70th.

Anies, was born in Kuningan, West Java, in 1969, and is widely recognized as an academician. While his deputy, Sandiaga Uno, was born in Pekanbaru, Riau, in the same year, is a well-known businessman. Sandiaga previously stated as 37th richest person in Indonesia in 2011.

Anies-Sandiaga won 57.96 percent during election, defeated ther rival TjaHajja Purnama and his deputy Djarot Saiful Hidayat who gained 42.04 percent of the vote.

Purnama, known as Ahok, went to jail for a blasphemy case during his campaign. The two-year prison sentence came after Ahok, who is a Christian of Chinese descent, was convictied of insulting the Qur’an.

In his speech, Anies delivered some of his work programs for the next five years. Anies promised to make best effort for their people’s prosperous.

“Today is a great responsibility in our soulders. Me and Bang Sandi (the deputy governor) will try to make Jakarta a smart city and bring happiness for Jakarta residents,” he said.(T/RE1/RS5)
