New Delhi, 29 Ramadan 1438/24 June 2017 (MINA) – Indian police said on Friday that a police officer was stoned to death by an angry group of local residents outside a mosque in Nowhatta near Srinagar city, north Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.
An angry mob lynched Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohammed Ayoub Pandit in the early hours today after his alleged firing on a group of people who opposed taking pictures of worshippers coming out of Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported, quoting a local police spokesperson.
“The official was killed by the mob while he was performing his duties. It’s a very sad and unfortunate incident,” DGP S P Vaid was quoted as saying.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also expressed her strong condemnation of the unfortunate incident and stressed that the state police force is one of the finest in the country and exercise maximum restraint when dealing with security situations.
According to local reports, the mob captured and stripped the police officer before stoning him to death.
In wake of a protest call made by the separatists against the killing of a civilian in Kakapora area of Pulwama yesterday, the security authorities have imposed restrictions on movement of people in seven police stations in Srinagar as a precautionary measure. (T/RS5/RS1)
