Italian Delegation Train Palestinians in Law and Human Rights

Ramallah, MINA – The Italian delegation visited Palestine for three days to provide intensive training in the field of law and human rights.

The training was held in collaboration with the Guarantor of the Rights of Prisoners and Citizens Without Personal Freedom and the Italian Antigone Association with the Palestinian Ministry of Justice.

ReliefWeb, the UN’s humanitarian information media for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), gave a report on Thursday, March 14, related officials and partners presented Italy’s best practices and methodologies to monitor respect for human rights in Palestinian detention centers.

The program was carried out in the framework of the project “Towards a System that Respects Human Rights and Human Dignity”, funded by the Italian Development Cooperation Agency in Jerusalem.

This is a follow-up to the official visit of the Palestinian Ministry of Justice representative to Italian partners in November 2014.

Italian law experts such as Michele Miravalle and Susanna Marietti shared their experiences with Palestinian officials about Antigone in Italy.

President Guarantor of prisoners’ rights Mauro Palma and person in charge of external relations Alessandro Albano also contributed to the training that discussed the duties of the guarantor authorities, the International Convention Against Torture and other related material, including the mechanism of global monitoring of prison conditions.

President Palma and President Gonnella, met with Director of AICS Jerusalem Cristina Natoli, and Attorney General Akram Alkahteb, who stressed in his remarks that the extraordinary results achieved by Italy and Palestine in the field of human rights.

Palestinian Justice Minister Ali Abu Diak and Deputy Italian Consul in Jerusalem Luigi Mattirolo, were grateful for Italian support for the establishment of the Human Rights Unit at the Ministry of Justice.

During the meeting, Consul Mattirolo sent a car as a prize for the project needed and for a monitoring visit to the prison. (T/Sj/R04)
