Malaysia Suggests Establishing a Secure Zone for the Return of Rohingya

Kuala Lumpur, MINA – Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamiidi said on Tuesday that his country would propose to the United Nations (UN) a decision to establish a secure zone that allows the Rohingya refugees to return safely to their homeland-Myanmar, KUNA reported.

He added in remarks to the media after visiting the Rohingya refugees’ camps in Bangladesh that this secure area will require the supervision of the United Nations (UN) or security officers, as he fears that their case will be a long-term humanitarian crisis.

The Rohingya dilemma cannot be solved by Bangladesh solely as it requires the help and support of the participation of international organizations and other countries.
Humaidi expressed his country’s desire to interfere in the internal affairs of other nations, especially Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states.

Despite that, Maynmar is a member country in ASEAN, but the Rohingya case became a regional crisis, which require cooperation between ASEAN members. (T/RS5/RS1)
