Russia Hails US Decision to Delay Moving Embassy to Jerusalem

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.

Moscow, 8 Ramadan 1438/3 June 2017 (KUNA) — Russia on Friday welcomed US president’s decision to delay moving the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Interfax news agency quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov as describing President Donald Trump’s decision as correct, noting that he followed steps of his predecessors.

Washington, a few days ago, declared that Trump decided to delay moving the diplomatic mission headquarters, but indicated that the decision did not imply intention to cancel the plan altogether.

Bogdanov urged the Israelis and Palestinians to resume conciliation talks and appealed to the international community to encourage them re-sit at the negotiating table.

He declared that the UN envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, would visit Russia next week.

De Mistura’s talks with the Russian leaders will deal with prspects of halting the violence in Syria and confronting terrorism, according to Bogdanov.

Russia, he says, has proposed resuming talks among the Syrian parties in Astana in middle of this month — with participation of Russia,

Turkey, Iran as sponsor states in addition to the United States and Jordan as well as the UN as observers. (T/RS5/RS1)
