President Abbas Calls World Leaders on US Steps in Jerusalem

Ramallah, MINA – President Mahmoud Abbas telephoned world leaders on Tuesday to warn them of the serious repercussions of the United States moving its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Abbas called his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, and briefed him on the telephone call he received from US President Donald Trump in which he expressed his intention to move the embassy to Jerusalem, according to WAFA Palestinian news agency.

He urged world leaders to act quickly to protect Jerusalem and its Muslim and Christian holy places from the danger they will face as a result of such a move.

President Abbas also telephoned King Abdullah of Jordan and King Mohammed VI of Morocco and also briefed them on the Trump call and the need to protect Jerusalem from any danger.

President Donald Trump will announce Wednesday his decision on whether the U.S. will recognize the contested city of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, according to the White House.

“The president, I would say, is pretty solid in his thinking at this point,” spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters.

Asked if Trump has weighed potential violence that may result from Washington’s changed stance, Sanders said “A number of things have been looked at that have been weighed into the president’s decision”. (T/RS5/RS1)
