Ramallah, 14 Muharram 1437/27 October 2015 (MINA) – Palestinian NGOs yesterday denounced the assault on the leftist Palestinian Member of Parliament Mustafa Barghouti, local news agency Sawa reported.
The assault on Barghouti, who is the secretary-general of the Palestinian Initiative, took place on Saturday night while he was in front of his house in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
“This suspicious assault comes at the time when the popular uprising against the aggression of the Israeli occupation is increasing,” the NGO said in a statement. Middle East Monitor (MEMO) reported
The statement also said: “The NGOs Network considers this assault as a dangerous act and calls for an investigation to be opened into the incident to reveal the identity of the assailants.”
It also called for affording the needed safety and security measures for the Palestinians and protecting the Palestinian social fabric from corruption and destruction.
Meanwhile, PLC Deputy Speaker Ahmed Bahar phoned Barghouti immediately after he was assaulted as he was updated about the incident by the staff of the council.
He urged the Palestinian Authority in the occupied West Bank to open an investigation into the assault and identify the assailants in order to be prosecuted. (T/P002/R03)
