PALESTINIAN AND ISRAELI ORGANISATIONS CONDEMN THE TORTURE OF DETAINEES

Jerusalem, 22 Rabiul End of 1434/4 March 2013 (MINA) – The Palestinian Human Rights Organization Council (PHROC) along with the Israeli Committee against tortures and some Israeli Physicians on Sunday (3/3) expressed their anger over the death of Arafat Jaradat (30) last week in Israeli jails.

They delivered it in a joint meeting as a form of human solidarity and the defense of human rights, Alhaq.org quoted by Mi’raj New Agency (MINA) as reporting.

According to the autopsy report of Dr. Saber al-‘Aloul, Director of the Medico-legal Institute of Palestine, it was revealed that Jaradat deaths caused by torture and ill-treatment while in Israeli custody. The young man from east Jerusalem was seriously wounded in the upper back, along the spine bruises, contusions on both sides of the chest. bruises on both arms, blood clots, bone broken on jaw and nose, and three broken ribs.

Meanwhile, Israel claimed that Jaradat died because of a heart attack after a few days on a hunger strike while in prison.

“His heart is really healthy and there was no evidence of any damage or weakness,” said Dr. al-‘Aloul.

Absolute prohibition against the torture is an international legal norms and has now become one of the most fundamental standards of the international community. Since 2001, there have been more than 750 complaints of torture and ill-treatment of Palestinians in Israeli jails.

However, responding all the complaints, the Attorney General of Israel has not given a recommendation to investigate the evidence on cases of torture in Israeli prisons.

Torture in Israel has a long tradition, dating back to the “Haifa Trails” in 1972. The Western media outlets have only reported sporadically about this wide spread phenomenon. The tortures are usually Shin Bet agents (Shin Bet=General Security Service GSS) who run special interrogation sections in some Israeli prisons.

Stanley Cohen, then professor at Hebrew University, said that a “society that tolerates such practices, requires self-immunization.
