One Passed away at Indonesian Student Demonstration

Jakarta, MINA – One of the participants of the Halu Oleo University (UHO) student demonstration passed away when he was shot in the chest by a police officer in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi.

the victim named Randy was a cadre of the Muhammadiyah Student Association (IMM).

Chairman of the Central Board of Muhammadiyah Student Association (DPP IMM), Najih Prastiyo said, Randy breathed his last after being shot by live ammunition during a demonstration at the Southeast Sulawesi Regional House of Representatives.

“Randy, who was protesting together with thousands of students in Kendari City, was hit by live ammunition in the right chest when a clash broke out between students and security forces,” he said in a written statement received by MINA, Thursday (9/26).

In this case, Najih demanded that the Head of the Indonesian National Police (Kapolri) remove the Southeast Sulawesi Regional Police Chief who was deemed to have failed and neglected in providing security guarantees for students in voicing their aspirations.

According to Najih, oral and written aspirations are protected by law. The police must be responsible for investigating this case thoroughly, and we IMM cadres throughout Indonesia will fully oversee this case.

“Students are not state criminals, who have to be fired casually. We demand that the National Police Chief investigate this case until it is truly clear and that the perpetrators of the shooting of our cadre (Immawan Randi) can be caught as soon as possible, “he said.

Najih claimed to express his condolences and a very deep loss over the incident. According to him, this incident was clear evidence of repressive actions taken by the security forces against students who wanted to voice their aspirations.

“We, IMM in Indonesia, express our deepest condolences for the death of one of the IMM cadres who was shot by live ammunition during a demonstration in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi. This is a huge loss for us, “he said.

Najih also questioned the procedures for securing the action which then led to pointing weapons and shootings that took lives. According to him, the procedures for safeguarding the action were not justified until sharp shootings occurred.

“Personally I condemn this incident. How can justified procedures for safeguarding the demonstration by using weapons complete with live ammunition. Do you want to secure the action, or do you want to war with students? “He questioned.

Najih asked IMM cadres throughout Indonesia to consolidate at each base and level of leadership. Calling for solidarity action on the death of Immawan Randy when in the field of action and against all forms of repression from the security forces against students.

“To all IMM cadres throughout Indonesia, let’s close ranks and consolidate at the base and every level of leadership to call for action on the death of our brother, Immawan Randi,” he said.

Former Chairman of PP Muhammadiyah Din Syamsuddin also encouraged the police to conduct honest and transparent investigations, so as not to cause slander. He ordered the Muhammadiyah Internal Team to immediately conduct an autopsy to find out the exact cause of Randy’s death.
