West Bank, MINA – The Israeli occupation army detained at least 40 Palestinians, including a senior Hamas leader, during overnight military raids across the occupied West Bank on Monday, according to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office, as cited by MEMO.
In a statement, the office said that Jamal al-Taweel, a Hamas leader from Ramallah and former mayor of Al-Bireh, was among those arrested by Israeli forces.
Al-Taweel, who was a candidate in the 2021 Palestinian parliamentary elections blocked by Israel, has a long history of detentions. In 1992, he was exiled to southern Lebanon along with other Hamas and Islamic Jihad leaders before returning to Ramallah in 1993. Since then, he has been repeatedly arrested by Israeli authorities.
The office added that 39 other Palestinians were detained in separate operations across Hebron, Bethlehem, Jericho, Nablus, Tulkarem, Ramallah, and Jerusalem.

Currently, over 10,000 Palestinians, including women and children, are being held in Israeli prisons. Human rights groups have documented numerous cases of torture, starvation, and medical neglect, which have reportedly led to multiple deaths among detainees.
Israeli raids and attacks across the West Bank have intensified since October 2023, leaving more than 1,059 Palestinians dead and 10,300 injured, according to Palestinian figures.
In July, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Israel’s ongoing occupation of Palestinian territory is illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.[]
