ISLAMIC STATE SEIZES PARTS OF SYRIAN MILITARY AIRPORT NEAR ALEPPO
Aleppo, 26 Shawwal 1436/11 August 2015 (MINA) – Militant fighters of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) hit the Kiweris military airport in Syria’s Aleppo with three car bomb attacks, killing several regime forces, activists reported on Monday.
The regime-held Kiweris airport has been under Islamists’ siege for nearly two years.
“IS militants carried out three car bomb attacks on the eastern gates of the airport east of Aleppo,” local media activist Marwan Hashim told ARA News, quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA).
Subsequently, IS fighters took over the eastern part of Kiweris military airport, including offices of pro-Assad air force command of Aleppo.
“The militant group was able to control the eastern part of the airport after clashes with regime forces,” Hashim reported.
On the other hand, Syrian regime forces in Aleppo hit the vicinity of Kiweris with heavy artillery in an attempt to ease the pressure on the stranded soldiers inside the airport. (T/P001/RO6)
