VUCIC CONDEMNS THE ‘MONSTROUS CRIME’ OF SREBRENICA
Srebrenica, 25 Ramadan 1436/12 July 2015 (MINA) – Tens of thousands of people gathered in Bosnia’s Srebrenica on Saturday to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the massacre of thousands of Muslims in the worst mass killing in Europe since World War II.
Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic of Serbia, whose country backed Bosnian Serbs during and after the 1990s Bosnian War, was among those attending. Shortly before arriving to Srebrenica Vucic condemned the “monstrous crime,” Worldbulletin quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as repoting.
“Serbia clearly and unambiguously condemns this horrible crime and is disgusted with all those who took part in it and will continue to bring them to justice,” he said in a public letter.
Serbian and Bosnian Serb politicians have long denied the extent of the killing, although two international tribunals have described the bloodshed as genocide. Prior to his visit, Vucic said that he will not accept 1995 Srebrenica events as genocide, but he will come to commemorate the victims.
The prime minister Vucic, who said in 1995 that his country would “kill 100 Muslims for every Serb who died”, abandoned the path followed by his nationalist mentors into the wars that broke up Yugoslavia the 1990s. He’s now pledged to join the EU and embrace austerity measures endorsed by the IMF. (T/P011/R03)
