Cairo, 12 Safar 1436/5 December 2014 (MINA) – The Saudi Committee for the Relief of the Palestinian People (SCRPP) announced a $1 million donation to the United Nations World Program (WFP) to support the food-insecure Palestinians, said WFP Wednesday in a new release.

WFP said that the donation “comes at a crucial time when humanitarian needs in Palestine are mounting following the conflict on Gaza in July and August, while the volatile situation in the West Bank adversely affects people’s livelihoods.”

It added that this donation would enable WFP to provide nutritious food and food vouchers for more than one month to some 122,000 of the most vulnerable Palestinians living in the West Bank, Wafa News Agency quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting

The donation was announced and confirmed at a signing ceremony in Cairo attended by Advisor to the Saudi Minister of Interior and the Chairman of the Saudi Relief Committees Said Alharthi, Executive Director of the Saudi Relief Committees Aldosari Saeed, WFP Regional Director for the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia and East Europe Mohamed Diab and WFP Palestine Representative and Country Director Daniela Owen.

Expressing her gratitude for the donation, Owen said that it “comes at a critical juncture for the Palestinian people, ahead of the winter rains and cold weather that will aggravate an already desperate situation for thousands of displaced families.”

“WFP looks forward to continuing its partnership with the SCRPP in Palestine and hopes for expanded cooperation in the near future,” she added.

To provide food and voucher assistance in the West Bank and Gaza until June 2015, WFP needs US$38 million, of which US$15 million is needed immediately to ensure the delivery of food vouchers and purchase of food for distribution in January.(T/P008/R03)
