Padang, MINA — The West Sumatra Provincial Government has decided to suspend all in-person learning activities and switch to remote learning for three days, from November 27 to 29, 2025.
The policy was taken as a preventive measure to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and education staff amid the increasing risk of hydrometeorological disasters such as floods, landslides, and strong winds in several areas of the province.
West Sumatra Governor Mahyeldi Ansharullah emphasized that safety must remain the top priority during emergency conditions.
“In a situation like this, safety is the main priority. It is our duty to ensure that everyone remains safe,” Mahyeldi said during a visit to Nagari Kampung Tanjung Koto Mambang, Patamuan Subdistrict, Padang Pariaman Regency, on Thursday.

Mahyeldi explained that learning activities may be postponed or shifted to safer methods when conditions do not allow face-to-face interactions. The disaster emergency response status, he added, provides local authorities with the flexibility to take adaptive measures to protect the public.
He urged residents to remain calm yet vigilant, and to follow official guidance from the government and field officers.
“God willing, with caution and unity, we can get through this difficult period,” he said.
Meanwhile, Head of the West Sumatra Education Office, Habibul Fuadi, stated that the administration has issued Circular Letter No. 300.2.1/7371/SEK/DISDIK-2025 to all SMA, SMK, and SLB educational institutions in the province.

Habibul stressed that although face-to-face learning is suspended, schools are still required to implement remote learning.
“The decisions made by school principals are crucial, as they understand the situation on the ground better than anyone else,” Habibul said.
He hopes teachers will continue to provide structured and proportional learning services through digital platforms, while prioritizing their own safety and that of their families.
The provincial government confirmed that it will continue monitoring developments. If conditions remain unfavorable, the remote learning period may be extended as needed.[]
