Istanbul, MINA – The future of Islam in Europe was discussed by academics at a conference at Ibn Haldun University in Istanbul on Thursday.

“The university set up a new research center dedicated to the study of Islam and its future,” Recep Senturk, head of Ibn Haldun University as quoted from Anadolu Agency (AA).

At the center of this research, researchers will conduct studies to find answers to questions such as, “What is the future of Islam in Europe?” And “Can Muslims protect their culture and language?”.

Senturk noted that Islamophobia developed in Europe, saying it was a threat to the continent, the United States, and all humanity.

“Muslims fail to show that Islam brings peace and prosperity not only to Muslims but also non-Muslims,” Senturk said.

He also said some Muslims had forgotten the teachings of Islam and acted against it.

Bulent Ucar, a professor from Osnabruck University in Germany, said the history of Christianity in Europe was not an ancient phenomenon.

“When we think of Europe, we always consider it to be Christian, non-Muslim. Just like Africa and Asia, we think these places are mostly Muslim, “Ucar said.

“However, this is wrong. Europe has met with Christianity later in history. And for the Islamic world, countries like Egypt, Syria and Turkey have a large non-Muslim population until now,” he added.

Professor Merdan Gunes, who also spoke at the conference, said Muslims must work together to solve today’s problems and put aside a little difference and disagreement. (T/Sj/P2)
