President Jokowi Conveyed Indonesia’s Five Views to Overcome Terrorism

Jakarta, 13 Shawal 1438/7 July 2017 (MINA) – – President Joko Widodo in front of the leaders of the G20 member countries conveyed the five views and efforts of the Indonesian government in overcoming and combating criminal acts of terrorism.

According to a press release from the Presidential Secretary Media and Information Bureau, Bey Machmudin on Friday, the first thing which the President disclosed is an appeal to the G20 member states to increase oversight of the flow of funds to radical and terrorist groups.

Indonesia, said the President, also appreciated the G20 country’s support for Indonesia’s membership process in the FATF (the Financial Action Task Force).

“The second is, G20 state members should be a driving force in counter-narrative deployment and encouraging the spread of peaceful and tolerant values by the capabilities of information technology,” added the President.

The President also called on the G20 countries to be a driving force in searching for a root cause of terrorism that are inequality and injustice. Then, they handle it by strengthening inclusive economic empowerment.

Meanwhile, the fourth thing that Jokowi conveyed is an invitation to the G20 countries to develop cooperation in the field of intelligence exchange, handling “foreign terrorist fighters” and the development of “capacity building”.

The head of state also conveyed how Indonesia handles terrorism through deradicalization program.

The President revealed the results through the effort, only 3 out of 560 former terrorist actors, or 0.53 percent wished to take terrorism again.

“The two largest Islamic organizations in Indonesia, Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama also play an important role in spreading peace and tolerant Islamic teachings,” explained Jokowi.

To disseminate the message of peace, the government also works with social media users.

In addition, the President also introduced to the leaders of G20 member states that Indonesia is a country which becomes the world’s third largest democracy.

“Indonesia is a country with the largest Muslim population in the world and Indonesia is also the third largest democracy in the world,” said President Jokowi.

With this unique and strategic position, President said Indonesia committed to being a part of a global effort to combat terrorism and to spread peace and tolerance.

A number of officials who accompanied the President during the first session are Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, and Head of the Coordinating Board of Capital Investment (BKPM Thomas )Lembong. (P2/RS5)
