One Woman Killed, 20 Others Injured as Bomb Explodes in Pattani Town
Pattani, 24 Muharram 143/25 October 2016 (MINA) – A 50-year-old woman was killed while 20 others were injured when a bomb exploded at a stall in Pattani town at about 7 pm Monday.
Pattani acting police chief Col Piyawat Chalermsi said among the injured included five children and senior citizen who were having their meal at the stall.
“The bomb was believed to have been planted at the stall that sells ‘Pi Berm’ noodles but the bomb squad which arrived later did not find any other bombs,” Piyawat was quoted by Bernama as telling reporters here Monday night.
The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment while the road close to site of the incident has been closed for traffic while cars parked in the area were asked to leave.
The kingdom’s Muslim-majority “deep south”, an area bordering Malaysia, has seen near daily bombings and shootings since the most recent wave of rebellion erupted in 2004.
More than 6,600 people — mostly civilians — have since died in a conflict that pits ethnic Malay militants seeking greater autonomy against security forces from Thailand’s Buddhist-majority state. (T/R07/R01)
