Egypt Stresses Importance of Keeping Communication Open Between PLO, US

Cairo, MINA – Egypt Sunday affirmed need to keep communication channels open between Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the US administration in order to create an appropriate atmosphere for resumption of peace process between the Palestinians and Israelis.

This came during a telephone conversation between Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri and his US counterpart Rex Tillerson that covered different aspects of bilateral relations and the current developments in the region, KUNA reported, citing Egyptian Foreign Ministry in a statement.

The two ministers also touched upon the US decision not to renew license of PLO’s office in Washington and its possible repercussions, it added.

The two officials discussed, in detail, the latest developments in the region, mainly tension caused by the current crisis in Lebanon and repercussions of Iran’s interferences into affairs of Arab countries as well as the consequences of the Yemeni crisis and the emergency meeting of Arab Foreign Ministers, according to the statement.

On the Egyptian-American relations, the statement emphasized the two sides’ keenness to give a strong impetus to the bilateral strategic relations, and to translate this practically to have positive impacts on the volume of cooperation and joint projects, which achieve interest of both Egyptian and American nations.

It referred that the two officials understand challenges facing their countries, mainly the economic and security ones in Egypt that need support by partners including the United States. (T/RS5/RS1)
