Indonesia Condemns Israel Over al-Aqsa Mosque Imam's Shot

Jakarta, MINA – The Indonesian government has expressed its concern and condemned the worsening situation in the Al-Aqsa compound and the shooting of Shaikh Ikrima Shabri, Imam and preacher of Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Al-Quds.

Israeli occupation troops fired at imaam as they dispersed people demonstrating for the closure of the mosque.

Indonesia also condemned Israel’s move to restrict access to the Al-Aqsa Compound, for infringing Muslims’ right to get the freedom of worship. In this regard, Indonesian government urged Israel to not to change the status quo of Al-Aqsa compound based on UNESCO resolution issued last year. In the resolution, Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock remain as a sacred place to be accessible to all Muslims.

“The Indonesian government asked Israel to immediately restore stability and security in the Al-Aqsa Complex. Indonesia also invites all parties to exercise restraint, so the situation will not worsen,” the minister wrote in a statement received by MI’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) on Thursday (20/07/2017).

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno L.P Marsudi has conducted telephone conversations with Jordanian Foreign Minister to discuss the situation at Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The secretary general of the Arab League called the action a clear violation of international human rights law, about the right to freedom to practice religious worship according to their respective religions..

“The actions of this Zionist entity will only cause tension and inflame anger in the city of Al-Quds and provoke Muslim feelings in general,” he said. (L/R04/RS5)
