Kuala Lumpur, MINA – Rohingya gunmen continued their coordinated attacks on a number of villages and towns in Rakhine district, northwest of Myanmar, in a new escalation of violance since last Friday.

The Rohingya gunmen surrounded 10 police locations in Mawingtaw town last night, KUNA reported, citing the Office of the Legal Advisor in the district said in a statement on Monday .

Militants blew up locally-made explosives, carried sticks, spears and swords, and surrounded many towns and police stations which sparked confrontations with policemen, the statement added.

The local police fired at the attackers to disperse them.

Securety forces are trying to stop and prevent attacks by terrorists in Mawingtaw which has an ethnic Rohingya Muslim minority.

Authorities in Myanmar announced on Friday that at least 32 people were killed in attacks waged on Rohinga Muslims in western state of Rakhine. Twenty-one rebels and 11 members of the security forces were killed in the attacks. ((T/RS5/RS10
