Ankara, 8 Dzulhijjah 1434/13 October 2013 (MINA) –Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that unfortunately discrimination between boys and girls still exists and it is not confined to one type of society.
Turkish prime minister says discrimination against women exists not only in Muslim countries but also in the West, even in the most developed, most democratic countries. Erdogan criticised parents who get upset when they have daughters instead of sons.
Speaking at an event on the occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child on Friday, Erdogan reminded his audience that his government introduced compulsory education for 12 years and it attaches great importance to girls’ education and will continue to do so.
He labelled people who exclude women from society as “ignorant and heartless,”Anadolu Agency quoted by Mi’raj News Agency (MINA) as reporting.
He added, “There are parents who do not provide their daughters with the same opportunities as their sons, such as inheritance.”
“We are following the problems of women closely and working on how to solve them,” he said.
Discrimination of women does not only exist in Muslim countries but also in the west, even in the most developed and most democratic countries he said, adding, “women are badly affected by old fashioned traditions and excluded from society”.
Erdogan called on women to stay hopeful despite problems and not to give up on their goals and dreams. He encouraged them to struggle with discrimination.
