Jakarta, MINA – Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), is conducting a weather modification operation (OMC) until March 8, 2025, to reduce rainfall intensity and prevent potential flooding in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Jabodetabek).
BNPB Chief Lt. Gen. Suharyanto stated that the operation began on March 4, 2025, following BMKG forecasts predicting heavy rainfall in the region during this period.
BMKG’s Acting Chief Dwikorita Karnawati explained that the operation targets flood-prone areas to control rainfall while ensuring early weather warnings for the public, as extreme weather conditions are expected to persist until the end of March 2025.
This weather modification effort is part of the government’s disaster mitigation strategy to reduce the risks of hydrometeorological disasters in Jabodetabek. The collaboration between BMKG and BNPB aims to minimize the impact of heavy rainfall and enhance preparedness for extreme weather conditions. []
