Sarajevo, 25 Jumadil Akhir 1438/24 March 2017 (MINA) – The US government has donated 24 Humvee multipurpose vehicles to the Bosnia and Herzegovina Army, hit by a chronic shortage of funding and equipment, to reinforce its technical capacity, EBL News reported.

Addressing a vehicle handover ceremony at Rajlovac Barracks in Sarajevo on Thursday, US Ambassador Maureen Cormack said that this was the concrete proof of US readiness to assist Bosnia and Herzegovina on its path towards NATO membership.

These vehicles will not take you into NATO overnight, but they show a clear US commitment to Bosnia and Herzegovina and its path towards Euro-Atlantic integration, Cormack told Bosnia and Herzegovina Army officers and Defence Ministry officials at the ceremony.

The United States has undertaken to donate 44 Humvees, valued at $3.5 million. The rest of the vehicles are expected to be delivered by the end of the year.

Defence Minister Marina Pendes said that the donated vehicles were very important to fill the army’s capacity because they could be used for various purposes. They will considerably improve the capabilities of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Army, she added.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina Army mostly relies on donations of mainly obsolete equipment. With a budget of 150 million euros, it barely meets its basic needs. (T/RS5/RS!)
